CASE STUDY

OVERVIEW

British Gas approached Trade Skills 4U with the intention of  training a total of ninety engineers to become EV charge point installers. Having identified the need for extensive training, British Gas conceded that their internal training centre was not equipped to upskill their staff to this extent, nor in the time-frame set out by their development programme.


After speaking with the Trade Skills 4U Business Division, identifying the skills needed by the engineers, inspecting our facilities during multiple visits and setting a timescale for intensive training, we agreed that nine classes of ten students would complete their training with us.

APPROACH

Keeping in mind Engineers at varying levels of experience, we created two bespoke courses to bring their installers up to a consistent level of proficiency. For staff with existing electrical qualifications, we created a five day course covering the updated 18th Edition wiring regulations, installation of steel wire armoured cable and the planning, design, installation, inspection and testing of EV charging equipment.


For those Installation Engineers with no formal electrical training, we added a further fifteen days training prior to this course covering some of the practical skills of installation, installation theory and Part P building regulations.

RESULTS

Over the course of four months, Trade Skills 4U trained nine classes, each comprising of ten students to become EV charge point installers. At the end of the course, the pass rate was 100% with every single student passing their City & Guilds qualifications on their first attempt.


During the development programme we were able to accommodate more than ninety percent of the clients requests for specific dates so as not to impact the individual engineers work schedules. This meant an absolute minimum disruption to the business and vastly reduced the financial impact of the staff training programme.
